While there are many brands and many styles, the actual weaves used are fairly uniform.

There are three basic weaves used in a vast majority of carpets on the market today. Each weave has benefits and cons. These may not be familiar terms, so let's take a closer look.

A tufted carpet is produced on a large loom. It comes in many cuts from pile to loop and so on. One color of carpet is typically produced. Often, the total carpet has no color when produced. After the weaving, the carpet is dyed in a particular color. Tufted carpets are typically one or two colors and are fairly durable. A woven carpet is much like a woven piece of cloth or clothing. It is a higher end product that is produced as a cut pile. Multiple yarn or materials can be used and intricate patterns can be created. While older production techniques were done by hand, most larger producers now used computer controlled techniques. A woven carpet is fairly durable, but will quickly fall apart in high traffic areas. It is typically used in homes and is a higher priced piece.

A needlefelt carpet is a more recent development. This carpet is synthetic. It is created by using electrical charges that cause synthetic fibers to burst and align together. This is a carpet that is extremely durable. It is typically used in high traffic areas such as office buildings, convention centers and so on.

When considering carpeting for your home, woven and tufted carpet is almost always going to be the pool you choose from.
