Overview of Types of Carpets

Overview of Types of Carpets
By Enrique Cleanotto

Whether you are building a new home or just improving one, carpet selection may come front and center in your decision making. Here is an overview of the nitty gritty of carpets.

Overview of Types of Carpets

Carpets come in many styles and many brands. From plush carpets that are difficult to clean to synthetic weaves that can take a beating, there is simple a lot of choices before you. To grasp the best choice for your particular situation, it helps to understand the basics of carpets and the various weaves used. While there are many brands and many styles, the actual weaves used are fairly uniform.

There are three basic weaves used in a vast majority of carpets on the market today. Each weave has benefits and cons. These factors just happen to correlate to each other, which means one of the three is usually a good choice for any particular situation. The three particular weaves are woven, tufted and needlefelt. These may not be familiar terms, so let's take a closer look.

A tufted carpet is produced on a large loom. It comes in many cuts from pile to loop and so on. One color of carpet is typically produced. Often, the total carpet has no color when produced. After the weaving, the carpet is dyed in a particular color. Tufted carpets are typically one or two colors and are fairly durable. The fill the medium to low end of the residential carpet market and are very popular choices for rental homes.

A woven carpet is much like a woven piece of cloth or clothing. It is a higher end product that is produced as a cut pile. Multiple yarn or materials can be used and intricate patterns can be created. While older production techniques were done by hand, most larger producers now used computer controlled techniques. A woven carpet is fairly durable, but will quickly fall apart in high traffic areas. It is typically used in homes and is a higher priced piece.

A needlefelt carpet is a more recent development. This carpet is synthetic. It is created by using electrical charges that cause synthetic fibers to burst and align together. This is a carpet that is extremely durable. It is typically used in high traffic areas such as office buildings, convention centers and so on.

When considering carpeting for your home, woven and tufted carpet is almost always going to be the pool you choose from.

Great Performing Kitchen Appliances Fast and Easy

Great Performing Kitchen Appliances Fast and Easy
By Abbie Frank

The kitchen is arguably one of the most used rooms in your home. It's also the area where the most grease and grime collect. Below is a short list of things you can do to keep your appliances running in top condition.

1. Remove all dishes, cups and silverware from a dishwasher. Add in one or two cups of CLR or Lime-Away product available from your local hardware store. Run the dishwasher on a pots and pan cycle for maximum heating and cleaning. Once this cycle is complete, run again to thoroughly rinse.

This will remove most of the hard water deposits, lime and scale that cause many of the poor performing dishwasher problems. Another good idea is, once completed, refill the Jet-Dry Container to help eliminate spots.

2. Remove the dust buildup from the refrigerator coils. The refrigerator circulates special chemicals that removes heat from the inside of the fridge. That heat is transferred out into the kitchen by coils located either behind or under the refrigerator unit. Dirty refrigerator coils can make your refrigerator up to 30% less efficient. Use your vacuum cleaner attachments to remove all dirt and dust buildup from these coils then your refrigerator will run less time and be much more energy efficient.

3. The garbage disposer is one of the unsung heroes in the kitchen. Although disgusting, they normally do a good job at keeping the garbage buildup at bay. If your garbage disposer smells or is making a lot of noise, here's a tip that may fix it. First, check to make certain that nothings been dropped into the garbage disposer. Next, fill your garbage disposer halfway with ice cubes. Cut up a large lemon and put into the garbage disposer then fill the rest of the way full with ice. Run the Garbage disposer until the ice has been crushed. This will remove most stuck and rotting food and make the disposer smell fresh. Lastly, run the water in the disposer to remove any ice build up.

4. Use a non-toxic Orange-based degreaser and clean the underside of the Range hood. There's usually one or two wire mesh filters that can be taken out and left soaking in the kitchen sink to remove the grease buildup. These can be cleaned in very hot water and the degreaser. If your range hood uses a charcoal filter for odor control, now is the time to replace it. Clean the outside with a grease cutting cleaner but be careful that it doesn't scratch the surface. Now would also be a good time to replace the light bulbs if over a year old. Re install the parts removed for cleaning.

Adding these 4 things to your kitchen cleaning checklist will not only have your appliances performing well but you will feel good about how clean your kitchen really is…at least until the kids come home.

Abigail Franks has 7 children and 7 grandchildren and spends a lot of time cleaning the house. Look here for some quick cleaning tips and information on vacuum cleaners to keep your home fresh and clean quickly and easily.

Rolling Hurricane Shutters - Convenient and Unnoticeable Storm Protection
By Michael Cottier

Rolling hurricane shutters are the most popular and convenient type of hurricane storm shutter on the market. The reason for its success is mainly do to the fact that they are not noticeable unless you have them closed.

Another benefit of rolling storm shutters is the ability to be installed on just about any building, regardless of the way you want it setup.

To open or close rolling shutters, you can have an electric motor, hand operated crankshaft or a pull tape system.

Roll down hurricane shutters can be closed or opened from inside or outside, whichever you prefer.

If you wanted to get the best use out of the system, your rolling shutters can have a central control system which will open and close them automatically on a schedule, when winds get to high or at the flick of a switch when you want them to.

The way rolling hurricane shutters work, is with a series of slats that roll up into a housing case for compact storage. When opening or closing the slats, they slide on a track at both sides.

The tracks and hood are the only parts that take up space, so usually 3 inches of space is needed for the tracks, and six to twelve inches for the hood at top.

Some Considerations When Buying

If you are still in the building process of a home or business that you need roll down hurricane shutters for, you can have them built in right along with the windows and doors so there will be no large part visible to the naked eye.

You should also consider the impact ability of your windows, because you might be able to just get some impact glass to protect them depending on the severity of storms at the location.

Another important reminder about rolling hurricane shutters is the fact that you can not have any custom shapes likes angles or arches for certain situations.

You need to also consider obstructions like exterior lights or other things that might get in the way of the installation.

Overall, you need to remember that rolling hurricane shutters have the highest initial cost, but provide the best protection available on the market.

Why Do Marble Tiles Make Great Flooring Materials?

Why Do Marble Tiles Make Great Flooring Materials?
By Vanessa A. Doctor

Marble has always been a trusted material for flooring and wall tile requirements, as it has always been for centuries.

There are several different types of marble used in residential and commercial applications. Marble has varied applications, and they include flooring, countertops, wall cover, fireplaces and exterior facades. The most common uses of marble for residential purposes are for window sills, fireplaces, decorative foyers and bathroom floors. Other bathroom applications also include wall cover, tub decks and showers.

There are some marble tiles which are processed for a finished look, and are known as tumbled marble. The process involves tumbling the tiles with sand inside a large drum. After some time, the corners of the tiles would become rounded and the edges slightly chipped, resulting in a quite worn, antiqued appearance.

Tumbled marbles popularity has increased dramatically in recent times. This is especially correct with regard to its use for bathroom countertops and back splashes. With a wide variety of shapes, colors, sizes and designs, tumbled marble can be used solely or to accent other types of tile. The possibilities for different designs and uses for tumble marble are virtually limitless.

Should you consider replacing your flooring, then switching to marble floor tiles could be a good option. Marbile tiles are stylish, easy to clean and they come in a wide variety of designs. The tiles can either be rough or smooth and they often have a pattern on them which could even include hand painted designs. Obviously the more unique the pattern, the more expensive the tiles would be, and the pattern which you choose will obviously depend on the room that you are placing them in.

Should you be placing the marble floor tiles in the kitchen, you will want a pattern such as leaves or, probably plain tiles could be your style. For the living room, a nice swirl pattern on the tiles could go well. Marbles vary in color from blurry, milky-white to gray and black, and some varieties have some shades of red, yellow, pink, green, or buff.

Buying Patio Furniture Covers - 3 Factors To Consider

Buying Patio Furniture Covers - 3 Factors To Consider
By Albert Lee

As you may know, patio furniture needs a lot of taking care of. The most basic thing you can do in order to protect your patio furniture is to get some patio furniture covers. As with any other product, you need to choose wisely when buying patio furniture covers. Here are some factors you should consider before deciding on a specific type of patio furniture cover:

1. Cost

When you think about the cost, you should definitely consider whether or not the patio furniture covers you are planning to buy are worth the cash being asked. It is actually pretty easy to determine if a product is a complete rip-off.

The general rule you should go by is: get the price to be as low as possible. You might not realize this, but negotiation is an essential and irremovable part of business transactions. Even if you buy patio furniture covers in the mall, you should know that the sales clerks and dealers are actually authorized to give you discounts. Of course, you would be saving yourself a lot of effort if you just went to a sale.

You should also try to avoid buying during the beginning of the winter season as this is the time when patio furniture covers are most in demand. This means the prices during this period are sky high.

2. Effectiveness

The effectiveness of the patio furniture cover can be judged either by looking at the various features that the product claims or by taking a look at what others have to say about that product. You should definitely read reviews or otherwise talk to people who have bought the patio furniture cover you are considering. This will help you uncover the truth behind the hype.

3. Design

More conventional patio furniture covers may come in plain white, but who says that you have to be conventional? If you want to, you can buy patio furniture covers which make use of various designs and patterns. This ought to help you prevent people from looking in dismay at the deathly white appearance of your covered-up patio furniture. Since patio furniture is most often left outside, you need them to look good.

Brazilian Hammocks

Brazilian Hammocks
By Tom West

The first known European reference to hammocks was made by Christopher Columbus in the 15th Century, when he described the people he encountered on his first voyage to South America as sleeping in "hamacas" and "nets". This was obviously a brand new concept to Columbus, who's countrymen and women would have slept in more traditional European beds. Nowadays, however, these "nets" have become an icon of relaxation around the globe, but still carry the feeling of exotic charm that Columbus first discovered.

Originating from the skills of Brazil's Tapeba Indians, these hand made, cotton hammocks are cross-woven, and usually brightly coloured, their effervescence being a trademark signature of the lively and rich culture from which they sprang. Unlike Mayan or Nicaraguan hammocks, Brazilian hammocks are more suited to slightly cooler climates, owing to the fact that they are not as well ventilated within the weave on account of their tightly-wound fibres. The tighter the weave – the more supported you feel as you lie in the hammock. The bed is soft and supple and is very much like canvas, leaving less of the net-like impressions on the user's skin than, for instance, a wide-weave net hammock, especially those made of synthetic materials.

Brazilian hammocks do not use a wooden separator at each end, and are ideal for lying diagonally, which is the traditional way to use them, their tight-weave also creating an extra sense of security, making them ideal for sleeping in. Much like Mayan hammocks, they can be hung in high-attach hammock stands, (as they dip more when used than hammocks which use separators at each end),or between two trees or posts, or from interior ceilings and walls.

Many millions of Brazilians use these hammocks as an alternative to beds on a regular basis, and their comfort and balance is tried and tested. Brazil's rich artistic and cultural roots have greatly influenced their styles and designs of hammocks, and their flare for colour is evident in the deep blues, vibrant reds, purples, and many other intense hues which go into their wonderful designs.

For this reason, (apart from their practical use), Brazilian hammocks act as an interesting and vibrant accompaniment and addition to many homes all over the world, with their owners as much interested in the Brazilian hammock's ornate, yet simple beauty, as their worth as a secure, comfortable place to sleep or relax and unwind.

Working with Landscape Contractors

Working with Landscape Contractors
By John Wilkes

Having a beautiful and functional landscape is every homeowners dream. Hi, My name is John C Wilkes III and I have worked in the landscaping industry for over a decade. I achieved my degree in Landscape Architecture and went straight into the design and build sector. I have worked around all kinds of contractors and have worked as a contractor myself. Now I'm ready to share my knowledge. My intention is to help all those interested in improving their landscape so they might avoid some serious pitfalls while fulfilling their landscaping dreams.

We have all read articles similar to this one before and they all say the same thing. They encourage you to get three estimates, check references, and consult the BBB for each contractor you are considering. That's all fine and dandy, but I'm here to explain how to deal with any contractor and get the results you want.

First, you want to choose the contractor that's right for you. One popular theory says that there are three aspects to consider. Those are timely service, quality work, and pricing. This theory states that you can't get all three aspects with the same company. That is you can't get great quality work, fast, at a competitive price. There is some truth to this theory. That being the case you should decide what's most important to you.

Do you need the job done fast or is it ok if the contractor takes a few weeks to complete? Are you only interested in top quality work or it it ok if it's a little rough in places? And are you willing to pay top dollar or are you looking to get more for less? You should consider these aspects thoroughly and then follow your instinct.

Once you have chosen the contractor you want to work with you should handle your payments to him very carefully. After all that's really all that's motivating the contractor to come to your house and do the work. Most contractors will demand a deposit of 1/3 or 1/2 of the total job cost to put you on his schedule. You can go ahead and put down this deposit, but you need the agreement in writing which includes all specifications of work to be done and the time frame in which he will start and finish.

Even if the contractor mentioned some work he could do during consultations you had with him, if it's not in the contract then don't expect it to get done. Even something as small as pruning some shrubs or clearing an area should be specified.

Also make sure the contract has real time frames. If he says he can start in a week and complete within two weeks then get it in writing. Ask for a penalty clause that says for every day that goes by outside of the time frame set he will deduct $100 from total job cost. Contractors are familiar with this clause and should agree to it.

Once a job is halfway completed, some contractors will ask for another payment. If the payment schedule was broken into thirds and the work is going well then go ahead and pay the contractor so he can complete the work. If things have gone very badly to this point then don't pay and excuse the contractor from the job.

When the job is almost completed the contractor will ask for the final payment. This is where you have to be strong. Make a list of all the details that have not been finished and tell the contractor he must finish the list before you will pay him the final payment. If you are comfortable you can pay him the majority of the final payment, but withhold 10% or so until the finishing list is completed.

Do not pay the contractor the total final payment if he is not totally finished. Remember he is working for the money no matter how well you are getting along. Once he is paid he will go looking for the next paycheck from the next client.

Build Your Garage: What To Look For In A Good Garage Heater

Build Your Garage: What To Look For In A Good Garage Heater
By JB Anthony

Garages are mostly multi-purpose in most homes. Different family members may come in and out of their garage as garages can be used as a play room for kids, a band practice room for a teenage son, or a work room or workshop for a hobby of a father. Multi-purposes garages are also occupied most of the time compared to vehicle parking area garages. For this reason, a garage owner may decide to equip his garage with garage gadgets and accessories that can make the difference between a good and productive "garage-time" and a poor one.

One of these gadgets or accessories that a garage owner may want to invest in is the garage heater. Accessorizing your garage with a heater can make a more comfortable garage.

There are many types of heaters solely for garage purposes. A garage owner can simply get lost in choosing the right kind of garage heater. It is important for garage owners to keep these tips and considerations in mind when choosing a garage heater.

Choose a garage heater with a warranty or with post-purchase services offered from its manufacturer. It is inevitable that with constant use, your garage heater may need to be cleaned once in a while. Most large garage heater companies offer post-services or warranty to their consumers. Post-purchase services and item warranty offers need not necessarily be translated as having bought a poor quality product. It simply means that the garage heater manufacturer is adhering to international standards for quality product and services that guarantees a continued service to their consumers.

As a garage may store many different flammable items such as oil, automobile lubricants, gas, paint, wood, papers, and such others, a garage home owner will be wise to choose a garage heater with safety features such as an auto temperature regulator. While it is important to keep oneself warm and comfortable while in your garage, safety should not be overlooked as well. Unregulated heat from your garage heater may prove harmful to chemicals and other flammable items stored in your garage.

Choose a garage heater that can adequately serve its purpose relative to the size of your garage. A small-engine heater may be enough for some garages whose owners do not spend much time inside it and who only need to use a limited amount of space for their hobby. Consequently, a large garage used by owners for a great amount of time will require a large-engine garage heater with enough power to warm the entire room.

Heaters are sensible investments once you have chosen the right garageheater for your garage.

Boy's Room Decor- Transforming his Nursery to a Big Boy's Room that will Grow with Him

Boy's Room Decor- Transforming his Nursery to a Big Boy's Room that will Grow with Him
By Amber Lipson

Your baby boy is no longer a baby and his room needs to be transformed from a baby's nursery to a big boy's room. You've put hours of thought and attention into decorating his nursery so that it would be perfect for him as an infant and now you want to do the same for him as he grows. But, be careful, you don't want to be updating his room décor every three months as his interests change. And a little boy's interests change often, sometimes overnight. How can you create a room that is perfect for him now, yet will grow with him? Here are some tips to decorating your boy's room to please him now and later:

· Wallpaper and Paint – If you had decorated his baby nursery with wallpaper and now want to remove it, you have discovered it is a lot of effort! For a big boy's room to grow with him, choose wall décor that is easily removed and changed. For painting a boy's room, select a basic color that is not too babyish: basic blue, green or white will provide a solid backdrop for decorating his room.

· Wall Borders – Another alternative to painting or wallpaper is a room border. Be sure to choose a colorful border that will suit him now and in the future. Avoid the popular characters and heroes of today for your permanent wall décor as they will soon be pushed aside for a new and better cast of characters. A basic sports border or colorful design will serve you best.

· Wall Décor – This is where decorating gets fun. There are so many selections of wall décor available for a boy's room today that finding colorful, personalized wall décor is easy and fun. Keep in mind wall décor can be easily removed and updated as your son grows and his interests change. Be creative in your wall décor selections by seeking out unusual artwork such as growth charts, intricate picture frames, treasure maps or artistic renderings of our world.

· Rugs – Even if your carpeting is bland and non-descript, your child's floorspace can be transformed into a fun place to play. Children's rugs can be moved, changed and folded, allowing another area where you can keep your boy's room décor updated as he grows. Children's rugs are one place you can indulge his delights at any point in time. A Scooby-Doo rug can be tossed aside and replaced by a baseball rug easily.

· Children's Furniture – As you will likely not want to be investing in new furniture for your child every year, you will want to choose boy's furniture that will suit him now and not become outdated as he grows. Select furniture that is sturdy and high-quality. A traditional, classic style can be made more exciting through a creative use of boy's room accessories such as funky clocks, cool lighting and lamps, decorative dresser knobs and fun outlet covers. Boy's bedding and pillows are a great way to provide color and décor that can be easily and affordably updated.

A vast selection of boy's room decor styles and designs can be found at http://www.rosenberryrooms.com/boys-room-furniture.html. How To Choose The Right Carpet Cleaner?

How To Choose The Right Carpet Cleaner?
By Kevin Babcock

Phone book? Internet? Mailers? Where is the best place to find a quality carpet cleaning companiy? It's not everyday that a person needs to locate such services. But when it comes time to maintain or restore the original look of that new carpet, what is the best method to summon top quality service at a reasonable price?

I would first suggest that you look for a certified company that educates their employees. This is important so that the technician that cleans your carpet knows what he or she is doing. Because their is an art and a certain 'chemistry' that needs to be followed in order to get the best results.

Next on the list is to find a family owned & operated carpet cleaning company. Many of the nationwide franchises hire low-paid and low-skilled workers that only care about getting a weekly paycheck. On the other hand, an owner/operator understands that their reputation is on the line. Therefore, they will provide a much better service. To put it bluntly - THEY CARE!

Now we have the dilemma as to where to look. The local phone book is a good place to start. Don't stop at the first page though. You may be surprised to find an extremely good and caring carpet cleaner in the middle or even on the back page of carpet cleaners. That simply reflects that they don't have thousands of dollars every month to spend in the phone book. Another source is the internet. You can use search engines to find the various carpet cleaners websites in your area.

However, I believe that the best source to find a good quality carpet cleaner is by asking around. Ask your friends! Neighbors! Family! When they get good service they want to spread the word. When they get bad service they will also talk. Therefore, the "neighborhood carpet cleaning watch" is probably the most reliable place to find a carpet cleaner.

Whatever you decide to do, just remember that when you do find a company that brings you the satisfaction that you were looking for - stick with them! Be faithful to that company. If need be, request the same person that cleaned your carpets the previous time. I believe that if you will apply these few tips you will join the family of overjoyed carpet cleaning clients!
